Through his advocacy for Rutgers University to divest from fossil fuels via a student referendum on its endowment, Nicholas assumed a pivotal role as the primary student representative, effectively influencing the university's decision. His efforts extended beyond mere encouragement; he actively empowered and facilitated connections among diverse stakeholders, thereby playing a central role in motivating the university to embrace proactive measures in pursuit of Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience.
Nicholas's commitment to service and philanthropy is evident when considering the RUSA Recovery Fund. Established in April 2020 in partnership with the Office of the Dean of Students, this fund was created to offer financial aid to students facing economic hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leveraging his expertise and experience, Nicholas assisted other BIG 10 schools and their student governments in establishing similar initiatives modeled after RUSA's Recovery Fund.
In his role as Student Body Treasurer, Nicholas was responsible for the management of more than $3,000,000 in student fee funds and the oversight of funding requests from 500+ student organizations. Concurrently, he skillfully negotiated multiple vendor contracts exceeding a total value of $400,000. Moreover, during his tenure, Nicholas achieved several noteworthy accomplishments, including the ban on plastic bags at Rutgers University, facilitation of administrative town halls, advocacy for campus free speech reform, and the centralization of initiatives to raise the University's minimum wage to $11 per hour, benefiting over 13,000 students.
As an Eagle Scout with pride in his achievements, Nicholas undertook the task of revitalizing the Landsdown Trail in Clinton, a beloved destination for hikers today. With the aim of enhancing accessibility and ensuring a smoother and safer experience for all users, Nicholas reconfigured the infrastructure and redesigned the pathways using eco-friendly materials that harmonize seamlessly with the park's natural and historical surroundings. Whether traveling by bicycle, on foot, using a wheelchair, or exploring with family, Nicholas's vision was to make the park an inclusive, open, accessible, and secure space for everyone to enjoy in every season.
